Study of Crack Propagation using ANSYS
Abstract:
In industries, crack failure in boilers and pressure vessels can cause whole process to stop
immediately without any warning and injury risk is also too high. In this project, crack
propagation in ASME SA-516 grade steel is studied using ANSYS. It is demonstrated that
crack propagation is strongly dependent on the local conditions around the crack tip. We
are using ANSYS to analyze the crack propagation and the effect of cracks on material
assembly under corrosion, pressure and temperature using FEM, CFD and steady state
thermal analysis in ANSYS.
The computed SIFs for a wide range of semi elliptical cracks under pressure and combined
(pressure plus thermal) loadings are provided as a reference tool for the fracture mechanics
design of the boiler pressure vessel. The results suggest that equivalent stress and the stress
intensity factors (SIFs) obtained by performing FSI are higher than considering only
pressure loading.
