<h2 style="text-align: center;"><b>Investigate and analyze the tool wear surface characterization of high speed steel (HSS) Processed by physical vapor deposition (PVD)</b></h2><div><b>Final Year Project Report</b></div><div><b>Mechanical Engineering Projects</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>ABSTRACT:</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">After studying and experimentations, the effects of wear and friction on physical vapor</div><div style="text-align: justify;">deposition (PVD) coated on high speed steel (HSS) is investigated and analyzed. High</div><div style="text-align: justify;">speed steel (HSS) is mainly used for making cutting tools. So, the cutting tools are</div><div style="text-align: justify;">exposed to high wear and friction during machining operations. Titanium nitride (TiN)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">coating through physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique was done on specimens of</div><div style="text-align: justify;">high-speed steel (HSS). Physical vapor deposition (PVD) of titanium nitride (TiN)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">improves the mechanical properties of high-speed steel (HSS). The tests perform to</div><div style="text-align: justify;">validate the hardness, surface roughness and wear rate. Pin on Disk wear test was</div><div style="text-align: justify;">performed on uncoated and coated specimens. Pin shaped specimens were made from</div><div style="text-align: justify;">high speed steel (HSS) by using EDM wire cut. Pins have 8mm diameter and 25mm</div><div style="text-align: justify;">length. It was found by wear and friction analysis from pin on disk test that there is a</div><div style="text-align: justify;">significant decrease in wear rate and coefficient of friction.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hardness of specimens was also compared before and after coating and results showed</div><div style="text-align: justify;">the improved hardness. The ”<b>profilometer was used to measure the surface roughness</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="text-align: left;"><b>of "uncoated</b></span> and coated specimens and significantly decrease in surface irregularities</div><div style="text-align: justify;">which results decrease in surface roughness. In this project, crack</div><div style="text-align: justify;">propagation in ASME SA-516 grade steel is studied using ANSYS. It is demonstrated that</div><div style="text-align: justify;">crack propagation is strongly dependent on the local conditions around the crack tip. We</div><div style="text-align: justify;">are using ANSYS to analyze the crack propagation and the effect of cracks on material</div><div style="text-align: justify;">assembly under corrosion, pressure and temperature using FEM, CFD and steady state</div><div style="text-align: justify;">thermal analysis in ANSYS.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The computed SIFs for a wide range of semi elliptical cracks under pressure and combined</div><div style="text-align: justify;">(pressure plus thermal) loadings are provided as a reference tool for the fracture mechanics</div><div style="text-align: justify;">design of the boiler pressure vessel.
